Polyamide-imide enamel insulation, often abbreviated PAI, is a high-performance insulation material used when magnet wire needs strong heat resistance, abrasion resistance and winding durability. It is common as a high-temperature enamel system or as an overcoat on polyester-imide insulated wire.
PAI is selected for demanding windings where ordinary solderable insulation is not enough. It helps the wire survive winding stress, thermal overload, slot insertion, varnish impregnation and long-term motor or transformer operation.
What Is Polyamide-Imide Enamel Insulation?
Polyamide-imide enamel is a polymer coating applied to copper or aluminum magnet wire. It may be used as the main insulation or as an outer overcoat over another enamel layer, such as polyester-imide. The conductor carries current, while the PAI layer provides electrical insulation and mechanical protection.

Thermal Class
PAI is often used in higher thermal class magnet wire systems, including class 200 and related high-temperature designs. Testing Requirements
Common tests include breakdown voltage, pinhole, thermal shock, scrape or abrasion resistance, adhesion, flexibility, elongation, conductor resistance and compatibility with varnish or impregnation resin. For severe electrical stress, partial discharge or corona-resistant tests may also be required.
