Enameled aluminum wire is an aluminum conductor coated with a thin enamel insulation layer. It is used as a lightweight winding wire in selected motors, transformers, inductors, coils and electrical devices. Like other enameled wire, it allows compact insulated windings without short circuits between adjacent turns.
Aluminum has lower density than copper, so enameled aluminum wire can reduce coil weight. It may also reduce material cost in some applications. However, aluminum has lower electrical conductivity than copper and requires careful design, connection and process control.
What Is Enameled Aluminum Wire?
Enameled aluminum wire, also called aluminum magnet wire or aluminum winding wire, is made by drawing aluminum conductor to the required size and applying an insulation coating. It can be supplied as round wire, rectangular wire or other winding forms.
The enamel coating is usually a polymer insulation system selected according to thermal class, dielectric strength, winding process and application environment. Common systems include polyester, polyester-imide, polyamide-imide and other insulation structures.

- Mechanical handling: Aluminum can be more sensitive to stretching, bending and surface damage.

Enameled copper wire usually offers higher conductivity, better compactness and easier termination. Enameled aluminum wire offers lower weight and possible cost benefits. Rectangular enameled wire can improve fill factor and compactness. Rectangular aluminum winding wire may be used in selected transformers, reactors and motor designs where weight and space are both important.
