Rectangular Enameled Wire

Rectangular enameled wire, also called flat magnet wire, is winding wire with a rectangular cross-section and a thin enamel insulation layer. It is used when a design needs higher space utilization, compact winding, better slot fill factor or improved thermal performance.

Compared with round enameled wire, rectangular wire can reduce empty space between conductors. This makes it important in high-efficiency motors, transformers, generators, reactors and EV drive motor windings.

What Is Rectangular Enameled Wire?

Rectangular enameled wire has a width and thickness instead of a single diameter. The conductor is usually copper or aluminum. The enamel insulation is selected according to voltage, thermal class, abrasion resistance, winding stress and application requirements.

Because the shape is not round, the winding process must control orientation, bending radius, edge stress and insulation damage more carefully.
