Round Enameled Wire

Round enameled wire is the most common shape of enameled wire. It consists of a round copper or aluminum conductor coated with a thin insulation layer. Because it is flexible, widely available and easy to wind, round wire is used in many motors, transformers, inductors, relays, solenoids and general electromagnetic coils.

What Is Round Enameled Wire?

Round enameled wire is winding wire with a circular cross-section. The conductor may be copper, aluminum, copper-clad aluminum or another specified material. The insulation may be polyurethane, polyester, polyester-imide, polyamide-imide, polyimide or another enamel system.

Compared with rectangular wire, round wire is easier to handle in many winding machines and is available in very small diameters for precision coils.

Conductor Materials

Round enameled copper wire is preferred when conductivity, compactness and reliable termination are important. Round enameled aluminum wire may be selected when weight or cost is more important and the design has enough winding space.

Insulation and Thermal Class

The insulation system should match the application temperature, voltage stress, winding process and required lifetime. Solderable polyurethane insulation may be useful in electronics coils, while polyester-imide or polyamide-imide systems are common in higher-temperature motor windings.

Round Wire vs Rectangular Wire

Round wire is easier to wind and more common. Rectangular enameled wire can improve slot fill factor and compactness, but it normally requires more controlled winding equipment and may not be suitable for every coil design.
